Dear Cornell Community,
In preparation for our upcoming presidential transition, I am delighted to share that John Siliciano ’75, professor of law, will serve as interim provost, effective July 1, 2024.
John is deeply familiar with Cornell and brings a wealth of experience and expertise as a long-serving faculty member and administrator at the university. Most recently, John served as deputy provost for six years, retiring in 2022. As deputy provost, John oversaw a wide range of academic and operational efforts, including dean searches, tenure and promotion reviews, support for department chairs, faculty policy oversight, and special projects and initiatives. John played an essential part in advancing Cornell’s academic initiatives, including the formation of the Cornell Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy and developing and implementing the university’s plans for teaching and research continuity throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to serving as deputy provost, John held other leadership roles in the Provost’s Office, as well as leadership positions at Cornell Law School, where he has been a faculty member since 1984.
The university will launch a search for Cornell’s next provost in the coming weeks. Our goal is to conclude the search and have a successor begin their term by January 1, 2025. We will be communicating the search process and committee in the coming days.
I am grateful to John for stepping into this leadership role for the university during this critical period.
Sincerely,
Michael I. Kotlikoff
Provost
