Dr. Augustine M.K. Choi named dean of Weill Cornell Medicine

Jan. 17, 2017

We are delighted to share with you the exciting news that Dr. Augustine M.K. Choi, the Weill Chairman of the Weill Department of Medicine, has been elected the Stephen and Suzanne Weiss Dean of Weill Cornell Medicine and Cornell University’s provost for medical affairs. The Executive Committee of Cornell’s Board of Trustees and the Weill Cornell Medicine Board of Overseers convened earlier today and unanimously approved his appointment, which will begin on January 18, 2017.

The search committee charged with identifying Weill Cornell Medicine’s next leader, which we co-chaired, spent many months interviewing the nation’s top physicians and scientists and conferring with key stakeholders at the institution. Throughout the extensive search process, Dr. Augustine Choi kept emerging as an ideal candidate, an impression reinforced by his clear aptitude as interim dean and remarkable academic and administrative accomplishments throughout his career.

It became obvious to the committee that Weill Cornell Medicine already had an exceptionally talented clinician, scientific investigator, entrepreneur, mentor and executive leader within its ranks. As interim dean, he has lent strength and stability to Weill Cornell Medicine during a time of transition, and he is the best person to help the institution and its faculty, staff, trainees and students continue to grow and succeed.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Choi and celebrating the selection of Weill Cornell Medicine’s 15th dean.

For more information, please read the announcement in the Cornell Chronicle.

Sincerely,

Hunter R. Rawlings III
Interim President, Cornell University
