The thoughts, concern, and goodwill of the entire Cornell University community turn today toward the Philippines. An estimated nine and a half million people in the central region of the country have suffered losses from Typhoon Haiyan. We are concerned as well about Vietnam, parts of China, and other regions that were also affected by the storm. Our hearts go out to our friends and colleagues as they reckon with their losses and recover from this catastrophe.
The people of Cornell University, including Weill Cornell Medical College and other programs, have many personal and professional connections to the Philippines through our alumni, staff, students, faculty, and parents. We are doing everything we can to determine whether we have students, faculty, and staff in the country and, if so, whether they are safe.
The Cornell Filipino Association is planning several events to aid relief efforts. Find up-to-date information at CFA’s website (http://www.cornellfilipino.com/) and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/CornellFilipinoAssoc). I am confident that other members of the Cornell community will contribute their expertise and support toward the recovery effort in the weeks and months ahead. We have a blog, relief.cornell.edu, with more information that will be updated in the days ahead.
As citizens of the world, let us offer our hands, our hearts, and the goodwill of our institution to contribute to rebuilding in a meaningful way.
