President Skorton’s message of condolence

Aug. 30, 2010

Dear Friends,

It is with great sadness that I write to inform you of the death of our student, Khalil King, a CALS sophomore transferring into the college of Architecture, Art and Planning who had been missing since early last Saturday morning. A search was undertaken immediately starting where Khalil was last seen once the Cornell police was alerted to his disappearance Saturday evening. Hindered by darkness and dangerous conditions, the search was suspended until early Sunday morning.

At this time, it appears his death was accidental and we await the Medical Examiner’s ruling. No foul play is suspected. The Ithaca Police Department is continuing the investigation, and anyone with information is urged to contact them at 607-272-9973.

On behalf of the entire Cornell community, I wish to express my heartfelt condolences to the King family, and to his many friends at Ujamaa and across campus who will always carry his memory in their hearts.

It is normal to feel sad at times of such loss. You are not alone. Your friends, your family, your teachers, your colleagues, and an array of counselors and advisors (see information below) are ready to listen and help.

Please join me in keeping Khalil foremost in your thoughts as we mourn his loss. Plans to commemorate Khalil’s life will be made in consultation with his family.

Best regards,

David J. Skorton
